$7.5 Million Saved from using Purifaaya instead of boiling thus far
150,000 Ugandans provided with safe water through the Purifaaya program
50 million liters of safe water provided
13,000 tons of wood not being burned
30,000 tons of CO2 (GS VERs) Emission Reductions through avoided water boiling
Clean drinking water...
Over 40 million Ugandans lack access to a clean water source, resulting in negative health, social, economic, and environmental Consequences.
Water borne illnesses like diarrhea remain a leading cause of death for children under the age of five, exceeding deaths from either malaria or AIDS. Lack of safe water also leads to malnutrition and prevents recovery from treatable diseases like pneumonia. Acquiring drinking water is an expensive investment across Uganda, whether boiling water or purchasing costly bottled water. Treating water borne illness is an additional expense arising from the lack of safe water.
SPOUTS seeks to provide safe water access through the distribution of Purifaaya water filters to the over 40 million Ugandans that currently lack the essential resource of water. SPOUTS aims to provide 5 million Ugandans, or 14% of the population, with access to safe water by 2025. This would represent a fundamental shift in the way Ugandans approach water purification and would save thousands of lives, primarily of children.

PUrifAaya Ceramic FILTERS
SPOUTS manufactures and distributes ceramic water filters using local materials. This allows us to provide an affordable, effective, and easy to use solution to water access in Uganda. The Purifaaya up to 5 years and costs 25 USD, making it the most affordable solution to safe water access in Uganda households.
We also offer a Purifaaya XL model to serve schools and refugee camps with water for their populations. 83 USD supplies these filters and a stand for easy water access.
Purifaaya is a locally produced product that provides jobs to many local workers. Upon delivery, the small financial contribution asked of the end-user creates a sense of ownership, and using the Purifaaya allows them to save time and money that will enhance their family’s wellbeing and independence.
Filters for Schools
SPOUTS has installed Purifaayas, both regular size and XL, in over 147 schools providing access to safe water to over 35,000 students. We are also working with partners like Save the Children and Building Tomorrow we can reach even more schools.
Uganda hosts over 1,300,000 refugees from surrounding countries. SPOUTS has worked with Oxfam and UNHCR to provide 2500 Purifaayas to households, clinics, and schools families in refugee settlements of Uganda and South Sudan.

Fostering Local Partnerships
By working across many types of distribution partners – including savings groups, microfinance institutions, and retail outlets – we can reach all Ugandans regardless of their economic status and location. By creating a product with demand, SPOUTS bolsters the local economy and helps not only our end users but also our partners to achieve greater economic prosperity.
Carbon Certification and Sustainable development goals
The project is generating the following annual impacts:
30,000 tons of CO2 (GS VERs) GHG Emission reductions through avoided water boiling (SDG13)
13,000 tons of wood that is not being burned (SDG7)
50 million Liters of safe water provided (SDG6)
150,000 Ugandans provided with safe water through the Purifaaya (SDG3)
$7.5 Million Saved from using Purifaaya instead of boiling thus far (SDG1)
Spouts is active across the whole of Uganda
Sales of filters are growing strongly, so we anticipate a corresponding growth in emission reductions and VERs over the next and future years.
